It can serve as a good moral foundation for peeps, but it was written by MAN - not God himself.

Though it was written by man, it's the most important book in society today, though it popular for cowards to bash The Book from the shield that is their computer monitors.

hm

The Bible being the most -influential- book to society is true... but only for western society...

I do not believe the Bible is the word of the lord. Man is an imperfect instrument, and even the current version of the bible is not the "complete" account. With the council of Trent and King Jame's reformation of the bible which made the book what it is today... Meanings have changed with translation, and books have been left behind...

As far as I'm concerned, the bible is a guide and a teacher, not an absolute authority... Nor do I believe it was ever meant to be.

with or without the Bible, Man knows the difference between right and wrong. i knew it was bad to kill someone before i had anyone, including this so-called Holy text, tell me differently. it was a feeling i had inside, ie, my God given conscience. and i think everyone has one of those, whether they grew up in a steady environment or not. that aside, the other reason why i dont like the Bible is because it persecutes against a whole lot of people, Jews and homosexuals in particular. it just isnt right.

It's true that we can find a moral compass within ourselves (I knew the concept of kindness and martyrdom before I ever came across the Bible; just as much as I knew ruthelessness...and nobody told me what they were. I just knew them); some people growing up in a rough and tough neighborhood might need some guidance and help, because of the pain that they might've went through have molded them into a character who acts badly in society. If they were seeking help and/or spiritual fulfillment, where else could they turn to but to nice people (not so say the people who act badly aren't good [everyone is a myriad - not one person is wholly good or bad, IMO] either, but they might need a figure or two from planet Earth who is kind enough to aid them a little) and religion?

EDIT - took the whole first part out cuz I was being an idiot. XD

The Bible to me IS the Word of the Lord; and the most important book ever written. I know a few things have been brought up in this thread, but for the purpose of keeping controversy from the board, I'll refrain from commenting on them.
